POLICE SPORTS UK 2009
This was the 7th year of the event and 32 competitors competed in the Mens
and Ladies Singles and Open doubles, slightly down on last year mainly due
to injury. It was again that whilst scoring would be difficult it was fair and
would reward good bowling. Despite being fewer games than last year, 20
200+ games were bowled about 6% of the overall total down from the 9% from
the previous year. The format of the previous year was retained to give
competitors to enjoy more of the facilities on offer at Potters but it still meant
a Tuesday night start for the singles competitors.

Mens Singles

This year there were  11 competitors, with each bowler having an initial 6
games, then a cut to the top 6 bowlers for a further 3 games.  After this the
top 5 bowlers would compete in the step ladder finals.
After the first 6 games the familiar faces made the qualifying cut but Ian
Foreshaw and Terry Stundon surprised everyone by making the cut.  Last
years winner Tom Walsh led by just 4 pins from Roger Smith.  A further 3
games saw Terry Stundon miss out on the step ladder finals.  Tom Walsh
went into the final as the leading qualifier and awaited his final opponent.
The first step ladder saw Ian Forshaw edge out Alan Hanafin in the final
frame 168 – 157.
Ian then went onto play last years finalist Steve Howat, in what turned out to
be the match of the tournament.  In the 10th frame Ian had scored 193
meaning that Steve had to strike with his last ball to go into a two frame roll
off and he did just that.  In the roll off Steve threw two further strikes to go
through.
Steve then played Roger Smith for the winner going into the final, by this
time Steve had found his form and triumphed 214 – 143.
The final was a repeat of last years final, however Tom could not make it
three in a row as Steve triumphed 202 -170 to take the title North of the
Border for the first time.

Winner: Steve Howat – Strathclyde – Scotland
Runner Up: Tom Walsh – West Yorkshire – North East

Ladies Singles

Unfortunately there were only 6 competitors in the ladies event which
followed the same format as the Mens competition so the competition was
not as strong as it should have been
From the outset Carol Barter led the way determined to regain her title, she
lost last year. Again there were no real surprises after the first 6 games and
it was Dee Wilson who failed to make the step ladder.  Carol Barter was the
leading qualifier and awaited her challenger.
In the first step ladder match Donna Stundon beat Jackie Docherty 148 -112.
Donna then went onto play last years winner Joanne Green and again she
cam out on top 176 -156.
Donna then took on Julie Eason for the right to meet Carol Barter in the final
and came out on top 168 – 125.
In the final Donna finally ran out of steam and Carol triumphed 162 – 132.

Winner: Carol Barter – Lancashire – North West
Runner Up: Donna Stundon  – Cambridgeshire – Eastern

Open Doubles

There were 10 teams competing in this event and the format of last year was
retained, with only 5 qualifying games before a cut was made to the top 6
teams. The leading pinfall team would then play the 6th placed team, 2 nd
plays 5th and 3rd plays 4th.
The winner of each match over two games would go through to the step
ladder final and the highest pinfall “lucky loser” in the 3 matches would also
go through.

After the initial 5 games was no real surprise and last years winners the Met
were leading the way on pinfall. After the knockout stage, the Met went
straight ot the final by virtue of higher pinfall.
The 1st step ladder final was between Sussex (Roger Smith / Craig Delves)
and Strathclyde 2 (Bill McVake / Dougie Campbell) and in a close fought
match Strathclyde triumphed  315 – 302.
It was then an all Scottish affair for the right to play in the final Strathclyde 2
took on Strathclyde 1 (Steve Howat / Arthur McKell), Strathclyde won 380 –
299 ......Strathclyde 1 that is!
In the final the Metropolitan team of Jim Kenny / Paul Hunt were determined
to stop Steve winning 2 titles, however they were unable to defend their title
and lost out 350 – 306.

Winner: Steve Howat / Arthur McKell – Strathclyde – Scotland
Runner Up: Paul Hunt / Jim Kenny – Metropolitan – Metropolitan
