POLICE SPORTS UK 2011
This was the 9th year of the event and 37 competitors competed slightly up on last
year. This is a welcome continuing trend.  It was pleasing to see new faces some of
whom will continue to bowl in our BPTBA events.  The scoring was again slightly
improved from last year with 32 200+ games, another welcome trend.  There were
no major problems experienced due to a major improvement in the ball return
equipment carried out by Potters.
The format of the competition remained the same as previous years.

Men’s Singles

This year there were  13 competitors, with each bowler having an initial 6 games,
then a cut to the top 6 bowlers for a further 3 games.  After this the top 5 bowlers
would compete in the step ladder finals.

After the first 6 games there were no shocks as those bowlers who were expected
to make the final 6 did so. Steve Howat- Strathclyde and Michael Cummings- West
Yorkshire led the way swapping the lead virtually every game.  Geoff Mitchell –
Metropolitan was looking down and out but in his last 2 qualifying games bowled
446 to storm his way to the last 6.

After a further 3 games Steve Howat saw off Mike Cummings (1707) to (1655) to
qualify for the step ladder final as the leading qualifier.
The first step ladder saw an all Met head to head with Geoff Mitchell continuing his
good form by beating last year’s winner Alan Hanafin 199 – 190.
In Geoff’s next match, another Met head to head he came unstuck against Clive
Knowles 192 – 166.
In the final play off for the right to meet Steve Howat in the final Clive beat Michael
Cummings 166 – 149.
The final between Steve Howat and Clive Knowles was a close match which went
down to the last frame of the match and saw Clive Knowles triumph 186 – 182 to
claim his first PSUK win.

Winner: Clive Knowles – Metropolitan
Runner Up: Steve Howat – Strathclyde

Ladies Singles

There were only 7 competitors this year which was a disappointment however there
were a number of welcome new faces.
Again from the outset Carol Barter – Lancashire led the way determined to retain
her title and make it three titles in a row.
There were no real surprises after the first 6 games with Carol Barter easily leading
the way and looking favourite to retain her title.  However it was Ria Brockhurst -
Gloucestershire who led the chasing pack.

In the first step ladder match Julia Thomas – Derbyshire beat Jackie Docherty –
Strathclyde 205 – 165.
Julia then went on to play Joanne Green – Kent and triumphed 148 -137.
For the right to meet Carol in the final Julia defeated Ria in a close fought match
168 -162.

In the final it was a step too far for Julia after fighting her way from the bottom of
the step ladder all the way to the top, Carol saved her best until last and triumphed
201 – 164 to make it three in a row.

Winner: Carol Barter – Lancashire
Runner Up: Julia Thomas - Derbyshire

Open Doubles

There were 10 teams competing this year up on last year and the format of last year
was
retained, with only 5 qualifying games before a cut was made to the top 6 teams.
The leading pinfall team would then play the 6th placed team, 2nd plays 5th and 3rd
plays 4th.
The winner of each match over two games would go through to the step ladder final
and the highest pinfall “lucky loser” in the 3 matches would also go through.

After the initial 5 games Sussex led the way and the only surprise was Grampian
making it to the second round. The knockout stage consisted of two further games
in a head to
head with the match winner going onto the step ladder final along with the highest
scoring loser.

The knockout stage saw West Yorkshire (Andy Clough / Michael Cummings) beat
Gloucestershire (Al Hopkinson / Ria Brockhurst) 897 - 757.  This was enough to send
West Yorkshire into the step ladder final as number 1 and was good enough for
Gloucestershire to go into the finals as “lucky losers”

In an all Scotland play off Strathclyde (Steve Howat / Arthur McKell) beat Grampian
(Martin Mgroaty / Derek Thow) 800 - 644.

The final match saw the first round leader Sussex (Roger Smith / Lee Franklin) take
on the 6th place Lincolnshire (Claire Howard / Ian Forshaw) and triumph 720 - 642.

The 1st step ladder final was between Sussex and Gloucestershire and in a
surprise Gloucestershire came out top 335 – 317.

Gloucestershire then took on Strathclyde who took their place in the final by
winning 353 – 329.

In the final the West Yorkshire team took on Strathclyde and it was fitting that the
high game of the tournament was rolled 414 by Strathclyde to beat West Yorkshire
who bowled 336.

Winner: Steve Howat / Arthur McKell – Strathclyde
Runner Up: Andy Clough / Michael Cummings – West Yorkshire
