POLICE SPORTS UK 2010
This was the 8th year of the event and 34 competitors competed in the Men’s and
Ladies Singles and Open doubles, a slight increase on last year. This year a
recognised Kegel “Middle of the Road” oil pattern was used and saw a significant
increase in scoring. There were over 30, 200+ games which accounted for over 10%
of all games bowled up from 6% the year before. In techno speak “the shot was
there” you just had to find it!
The format of the competition remained the same as previous years.
Men’s Singles
This year there were 13 competitors, with each bowler having an initial 6 games,
then a cut to the top 6 bowlers for a further 3 games. After this the top 5 bowlers
would compete in the step ladder finals.
After the first 6 games there was an unexpected shock as two former winners
Roger Smith and Tom Walsh did not make the qualifying cut. Alan Hanafin led the
way with some high scoring with 1272 (4, 200 + games) from Michael Cummings on
1244 (4, 200+ games) the only bowlers over a 200 average and it looked like they
would contest the final at this early stage.
After a further 3 games Alan Hanafin (1970) just held off Mike Cummings (1962) to
qualify for the step ladder final as the leading qualifier.
The first step ladder saw last years winner Steve Howat beat the surprise qualifier
from Fyfe Edward Cartmell 199 - 146.
Steve then went onto play Norfolk’s Mark Scott. Unfortunately the lanes suffered a
breakdown due to a technical failure which meant the game had to be switched to
another pair of lanes with only a few frames left. Steve ran out eventual winner 147
v 131.
In the play off for the final Michael Cummings saw off Steve Howat 181 – 147.
The final match saw the top two players of the tournament go head to head and it
proved to be an absorbing contest with the match decided on the last ball.
Needing 8 to win the tournament on his last ball Alan Hanafin threw the required 8
to beat Michael by 1 pin and win 168 -167.
Winner: Alan Hanafin – Metropolitan
Runner Up: Michael Cummings – West Yorkshire – North East
Ladies Singles
There were 9 competitors in the ladies event which followed the same format as the
Mens competition.
From the outset Carol Barter led the way determined to retain her title. Again there
were no real surprises after the first 6 games with Carol and last years finalist
Donna Stundon leading the way. Carol Barter was the leading qualifier by almost
300 pins and awaited her challenger in the final.
In the first step ladder match Julie Eason beat Claire Howard 189 – 159.
Julie then went onto play Gill Taylor but lost 168 - 145.
Gill then took on last year’s finalist Donna Stundon for the right to meet Carol Barter
in the final. Donna triumphed 176 – 146.
In a repeat of the 2009 final Donna again could not defeat Carol who triumphed 156
– 137.
Winner: Carol Barter – Lancashire – North West
Runner Up: Donna Stundon – Cambridgeshire – Eastern
Open Doubles
There were 9 teams competing in this event and the format of last year was
retained, with only 5 qualifying games before a cut was made to the top 6 teams.
The leading pinfall team would then play the 6th placed team, 2nd plays 5th and 3rd
plays 4th.
The winner of each match over two games would go through to the step ladder final
and the highest pinfall “lucky loser” in the 3 matches would also go through.
After the initial 5 games West Yorkshire led the way followed by the surprise
package of Kent. The knockout stage consisted of two further games in a head to
head with the match winner going onto the step ladder final along with the highest
scoring loser.
The knockout stage saw West Yorkshire (Tom Walsh / Michael Cummings) beat
Cambridgeshire (Terry / Donna Stundon) 864 – 630. This was enough to send West
Yorkshire into the step ladder final as number 1.
The surprise package Kent (Tim Matthews / Steve Alexander) beat Metropolitan 2
(Eric Von Tersch / Henry Sycamore) 779 – 642.
The final match saw Strathclyde (Steve Howat / Arthur McKell) beat Metropolitan 1
(Jim Kenny / Paul Hunt) 793 -729.
However the metropolitan team score of 729 was good enough to take them into
the step ladder final as “lucky” loser.
The 1st step ladder final was between Kent and Metropolitan 1 and in a close
fought match Kent triumphed 397 – 370, were Kent on the way to the final?
Kent then took on the reigning champions Strathclyde unfortunately Kent chose to
have their worst game of the tournament and lost 385 – 298.
In the final the West Yorkshire team took on Strathclyde and maintained their good
form which had seen them reach the final and won 385 - 341
Winner: Tom Walsh / Michael Cummings – West Yorkshire – North East
Runner Up: Steve Howat / Arthur McKell – Strathclyde – Scotland
